Lake Rotorua Challenge

As you probably know by the ‘one-hitter-quitter’ blog posts over the weekend that we were in the amazing picturesque city of Rotorua for the Lake Rotorua Challenge.

The circuit was two laps of the lake you see above totaling in 84km, pretty mellow, aside from one or two hella “c*#nty” hills for track bikes.

Most of the crew made the trip with myself (Hagan), Conrad, Duncan and David riding fixed, and Kenny smangin’ it on his roady.

After deciding that we wanted to have as much fun as possible on this “race” we opted for cut-offs and basket ball singlets over lycra, aside from Kenny who actually raced and did rather well i must add!

I took my trust Olympus mju-II/Stylus Epic 35mm on the ride with us…

An amazing morning was gifted to us, not a breath of wind on the lake.

Kenny held with the rest of us for the first maybe 20 odd Ks and then headed off on his merry roadie way and left us to essentially fuck around and soak up the atmosphere!

This was Davids first ‘race’ I dont think he enjoyed it as much as some of us, although he did get stuck with all the mechanical failures, loosing chainring bolt (not 100% sure how) and a flat 3km out from the finish line!

A few tips from Duncan;

1st The roads around Ngongotaha are rough as hell and the side walk is smoother.

2nd Just faux coast it, its much easier than constantly pedaling.

But the best call of the day came from Mr Conrad Smith or ‘Smithy’ and some rogue as old roadie decided to call him…

Half way coffee! Not the best for setting trailblazing lap times, but all the better for conforming to stereotypes!

Big thanks to every one that came on the trip but mainly a massive thanks to Kennys hair and his mad roadie swag.

Im sure there will be more to come maybe some times even?? but for now thats all folks.
